“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”— Roy T. Bennett

Personal Power

Your personal power is directly proportional to your ability to control your emotions and feelings. Emotions are physical and instinctive. They are caused by chemicals subconsciously released by your brain in response to a specific event or trigger.

Feelings form when you consciously or subconsciously give meaning to the emotional experience you are having. Feelings happen as you begin to consciously think about the emotion, to ‘let it soak in’. They are your response or reaction to the emotions.

What happened may be outside your control. How you react or respond is within your control.

A controlled response, in most cases, is better than reacting. Easy to say, harder to do.

“When we direct our thoughts properly, we can control our emotions.”
 W Clement Stone.

This week’s ADHD Advantage

ENTHUSIASM

Your ADHD brain uses enthusiasm to release dopamine.

It is what makes you feel alive and helps you bring intense enjoyment and excitement to life.

One of the benefits of enthusiasm is that it is contagious. When you are enthusiastic, you
automatically inspire others.

Use enthusiasm to help you identify your values and goals. What stirs your soul? What fires up your emotions? What exciting ideas keep you awake at night? What would you gladly do more of?

Success requires enthusiasm
  • Enthusiasm helps to keep you focused.
  • Enthusiasm helps you push through life’s challenges.
  • Enthusiasm gives you the motivation to act.
  •  Enthusiasm provides the fuel, the energy to get sh*t done.

This week’s ADHD Challenge

OVERWHELMED

I often feel overwhelmed. And most of it is self-inflicted.

I have such a strong dislike for boredom that I knowingly overcommit to too many tasks. I will always try and jam another task or three into my already full day.

Instead of three major projects for the day, I will add another couple just in case I get through the other majors on time. Then I stress myself if I don’t get them ALL done.

This used to leave me feeling frustrated and annoyed instead of celebrating the things I did accomplish. So instead of dopamine, I get cortisol.

I use the following to reduce feeling overwhelmed.

Solutions

  • Learn to say NO
  • Learn to delegate more
  • Prioritise and organize your tasks
  • Celebrate each completed task
  • Sometimes done is good enough.
  • Take a break to restore your energy and reframe your mindset.

Weekly Tip

TIME

We all want more time to enjoy our life and do things that mean something to us.

We complain about not having enough time to fit everything in.The truth is there is plenty of time if we learn how to use it.

Don’t waste this irreplaceable resource.

You’ve wasted time if you read a non-fiction book and don’t act on any of its suggestions.

You’ve wasted time if you start something and don’t finish it.

Invest your time by taking action towards what you really want out of life today.

Remember, no one is guaranteed tomorrow, next week or next year. It’s best to start investing your
time today.

You don’t want to look back a week, a month or a year from now and wish you had started today.
